If your cookie banner stops working after a performance update, compare the published page with optimization enabled and disabled. Check when consent defaults become available, when the banner initializes, and when optional tools start. A correct saved choice at the end can hide an earlier failure.
Keep the CMP, the consent management platform already installed, in place while you investigate. The problem may be the script loading it, a tool outside its blocking integration, or an old cached release. A faster page doesn't establish that its consent behavior stayed the same.
Keep the final choice; change the load order
The visitor rejects in both releases. Delay the consent bootstrap, then protect the default to see whether an earlier cookie write disappears.
- 150 msCustom analytics loader checks permission
Bug: missing state falls through to start; example cookie written
- 600 msDefault denial available
Consent bootstrap becomes readable
- 900 msVisitor rejects
Saved state: denied in both releases
- Choice at 900 ms
- Denied in both configurations
- Example cookie written earlier
- Yes
The final choice is denied, but the example tool started before the default was available.
Invented custom analytics loader: it incorrectly starts when consent state is unavailable. Times and cookie writes are teaching fixtures, not a reproduction of a particular CMP or optimization plugin. Google Consent Mode requests require separate interpretation.
Compare the published configurations
Save the affected URL, release, optimization settings, and visitor location. In separate fresh sessions, compare first load, acceptance, and rejection. Include a first-load observation before moving the mouse or scrolling when the optimizer waits for interaction.
WP Rocket's Delay JavaScript Execution postpones scripts until interaction and applies to cached or optimized pages. Scripts inserted after page load can follow a different path. Its troubleshooting guide recommends isolating the delay feature before finding specific exclusions.

Inspect the first tool event
- Confirm the browser loaded the intended published release. Record whether the tested response came from a cache.
- Find the first consent default, CMP initialization, choice update, and relevant tool event. Keep their order with the cookie and request observations.
- Inspect the loader for the tool that started too early. Check tag-manager, theme, plugin, and dynamically inserted paths before assigning a cause.
- Compare that trace with optimization disabled, changing one setting at a time. A disappearing symptom narrows the investigation; it doesn't identify the exact script by itself.
The demo uses a custom analytics loader that incorrectly starts when consent state is missing. Your site's integration may fail differently. For Google tags, inspect consent initialization timing and compare requests after cookie rejection with the saved choice and cookie evidence.
Use the installed vendor's supported fix
For Complianz, its debugging documentation describes conflicts caused by delaying its script or combining a service into a changing file. Use the guidance for your installed version and actual loader. Do not copy an exclusion list for a different CMP or turn off every performance feature as the permanent fix.

Publish the change, refresh the relevant caches, and repeat the original regional paths. Keep the baseline, changed configuration, observation window, and new evidence together. A staging fix needs a production retest.
Repeat the check where the configuration differs
A German rejection check doesn't cover a UK template that loads a different tool. You can maintain your own regional browsers and saved traces. CookieTrail runs fresh first-load, accept, and reject paths for a public URL in a supported location, so your team can investigate findings and retain a matching retest after deployment.
